Plaques unveiled at Bromsgrove Station

James Edward McConnell (1815–1883) the Birmingham & Gloucester Railway Company’s Locomotives Superintendent between 1841 to 1847, displayed outstanding engineering skills and conceived the Institution of Mechanical Engineers while working at Bromsgrove. Today the Institution is the leading organisation of its type in the world.

William Scarth Moorsom (1804–1863) commenced building the line for the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway Company in 1836. The Institution of Civil Engineers awarded him the Telford Medal for being the first to successfully use iron caissons to secure a bridge. His greatest achievement, the Lickey Inclined Plane took two years to complete. During the line’s construction, Moorsom boldly ordered American locomotives to assist traffic ascending the Incline.
